Dear Fellow Travelers: This month's newsletter outlines the tragic events leading up to the death of the last Tsar of Russia and his
immediate family. There is a personal note of sadness in this tragic affair as my wife and I were witnesses as the remains of Nicholas
II and his beloved family were ceremoniously carried into the Church in the Peter and Paul Fortress in July, 1998. There was an honor
guard of soldiers in fatigue uniforms with fixed bayonets to escort the bodies into the church. I will never forget the sense of tragedy
that we experienced and the feeling that we were witnesses to one of the most poignant moments in all of Russian history.
Today is a special day for the two of us as we preparing to return to Russia again to lead our July tour. It is Cheryl's first visit since
that summer of 1998 and we are looking forward to "White Nights", fabulous food, and greeting old friends. Anastasia will be preceding us
by a week in order to accommodate a small group of New Yorkers and will meet us in St. Petersburg as we conclude our Moscow and Golden Ring
tour prior to arriving in my favorite city.
My group boasts a pair of Michiganders, a Canadian, a South Carolinian, and prior visitors from the Lone Star state of Texas. Highlights
of our tour will be Moscow, Vladimir, Suzdal, and a premier tour of St. Petersburg, and Novgorod. We will dine in palatial splendor and
enjoy live music, ballet, and the canals of the Venice of the North.
I will especially enjoy a return to the Academy of Arts Museum and a brunch at the Taleon Club. I cannot tell you how much I hope that you
will be able to join us in October of 2005 for our fall tour. Until next time we will continue to seek out the most exciting and rewarding
travel experiences to be enjoyed in Russia.
Sincerely,
Michael E. Donnelly, Ph.D.
