The Hotel Astoria opened its doors in 1912 and has enjoyed a
historical past. Constructed by architect Lidval and with an
elegant interior design surpassing that of its competitors,
the hotel was perceived as a true work of international collaboration
involving the skills of both Western European and Russian companies.
Telephones were installed in all rooms, most of which had ensuite
facilities, and an efficient heating system, driven by hot water
and low-pressure steam, ensured that even the harshest Russian winter
did not taint a guest's visit to the hotel.
The hotel remained open during the First World War but was
commissioned by the Russian military.
Subsequently it became a hostel for the new masters of the city
and famous visitors such as Lenin, before being reinstated as a
hotel in 1926.
The Astoria also survived the Second World War, acting as a hospital
and refuge for the homeless people of the city. Given its prestigious
reputation as a fine hotel, it was here that Hitler had planned to
host a banquet to celebrate his German victory - for which he even
had the invitations printed.
As we all now know, this event never took place.
The hotel has been made more luxurious by incorporating higher
international standards, whilst at the same time maintaining a
Russian feeling and ambience. The identity of the hotel has been
preserved allowing it to reflect its location and history.
Situated next to the landmark St Isaac's Cathedral, the Astoria is
ideally located for visiting all of the main attractions of the city:
palaces and gardens, museums, shopping areas and nightlife, many of
which are within walking distance.
In addition, the hotel is only thirty minutes from the airport and
the main railway station for Moscow is also nearby, making it an
ideal location for all guests, whether they are visiting on business
or pleasure.
