The Hermitage Theater, one of the oldest in Russia, was built by Catherine the Great from 1782-1785. The theater was constructed in the shape of an amphitheater with imitation walls and columns of marble. Performances were held twice a week and all of the St. Petersburg theater groups performed there for the court. Catherine the Great sometimes wrote a libretto herself.

Mussorgsky Opera and Ballet Theater (Built by A. Briullov 1833)
The first performance in this theater was in 1833. It was originally called the Mikhailovsky theater under the Tsars. Since it had no fixed company at the time of its opening it was primarily used as a concert hall. The French and German dramatic companies performed there for many decades. Today it is one of the best known opera and ballet theaters in St. Petersburg.

Opera and Ballet Theater of the Conservatory (reconstructed in 1896)
The St. Petersburg Conservatory is the oldest musical institution of higher education in Russia. Founded in 1862, the conservatory opened under the leadership of the outstanding pianist, composer, and conductor, Anton Rubinstein. The musical giant, Peter Tchaikovsky, graduated in 1865. Other notable graduates include Rimsky-Korsakov, Anotoly Lyadov, Alexander Glazunov, Nikolay Myaskovsky, Sergey Prokokiev, Dmitry Shostakovich and many others.

St. Petersburg Philharmonic Society (C. Rossi, 1839)
The St. Petersburg Phil harmonica at over 200 years is the oldest in Russia. It was the first Philharmonic Society formed in Europe in 1802. The world premier of Beethoven's Missa Solemis was performed there in 1824. The large and small halls of this society, completed in 1839, have been used by, both world famous, as well as young developing musicians for many decades.

Academic Cappella (L. Benois)
This cappella is host to a choir, symphony orchestra, an educational institution, and serves as a concert hall. It boasts fantastic acoustics and a very historical organ. These facts make the Cappella unique in the world of music. The original Cappella Choir was formed by Ivan the Terrible in 1479 and accompanied him wherever he went, even on military campaigns. This famous Cappella is regarded as the leader in Russian choral music. The works of Mozart, Verdi, Beethoven, and Haydn are often performed there.
